Base Layer
Technical base layer, or next-to-skin layer should be an integral part of every outdoor clothing system. Its main function is to move or 'wick' moisture away from the skin to prevent heat loss from the body. Some base layers, particularly, Merino wool layers place a greater emphasis on insulation and double up as thermal underwear for cold weather in winter. Another advantage of Merino wool base layers is that they are less prone to take on body odours! Paramo Cambia base layer uses Paramo's own Parameta T reversible fabric, a lightweight directional fabric that offers the choice of two levels of cooling. It is an asymmetrical, wicking fabric that directs water from one face to the other as well as rapidly spreading moisture to speed up evaporation and the resultant cooling. Technical base layers are easy to wash and quick-drying. They are available in a men's and women's fit, with styles ranging from boxers to briefs, vest tops, T shirts and long sleeve crew necks. Also available for the winter skier or climber is the high neck with chest zip. This allows the user to keep warm when stationary (on a belay) and to cool off quickly during or after bursts of high activity. In the winter months leggings or long johns are an efficient way of keeping warm. They allow you to layer up with comfort and to utilise your existing outdoor clothing. These also come in different weights. Lightweight is better for active sports, not too hot and allows for better freedom of movement, and obviously heavier weight better in colder climes or for less active outdoor pursuits like bird watching.
